Contribution rules

This atlas collects everyday memories across generations in Mudanjiang. These rules help protect the people, photographs and stories entrusted to it.

Rules version · 2026-10-29

01

A personal account, with room for uncertainty

Write what you remember in your own words. Distinguish recollections, quotations and researched facts. Credit sources and explain uncertain dates or locations. Different memories of the same place can stand alongside one another.

02

Permission to share

Submit writing and photographs you created or have the necessary permission to publish. Name the photographer, author or collection when known. Giving credit, owning a print, or calling a project educational does not by itself grant copyright permission. Keep any permission evidence privately; do not upload identity documents.

03

People’s privacy and dignity

Consider the people named or pictured, including deceased people and their families. Obtain necessary permission for personal information and identifiable portraits. Leave out private contact details, identity documents, precise private home locations, health or financial details, and children’s personal data. A contributor’s confirmation does not replace another person’s consent.

04

Respectful and lawful contributions

Do not submit threats, harassment, discriminatory abuse, defamatory allegations, explicit sexual material, incitement to violence, or other unlawful content. A memory is not proof of an allegation about another person. The administrator may request clarification, return a contribution, or withdraw it from public view.

05

Review before publication

No account is needed to add places, stories and photographs. A new place stays private until its first linked story or photo is approved. New posts and edits wait for administrator approval. Once approved, the contributor name, content, photographs and related map place are public. You can edit or delete your own contributions; editing sends them back for review. Creating a place gives no control over other people’s memories.

06

Your data and editing access

An essential cookie remembers this browser for up to 180 days so you can manage your contributions. No email address or WeChat account is required. Clearing cookies, using a private window or changing devices loses this editing access; there is no account recovery. Text, review records and photo details are stored in the site database; original photo files are stored separately. Pending content and reports are private to their contributor and administrator. Approved uploads may retain embedded photo metadata, so remove information you do not want to share before uploading. The independent deployment stores its database and private photograph files on the operator’s server; the street map loads OpenStreetMap tiles.

07

Corrections and removal requests

Use “Report a concern” on a place, memory or photograph to ask the administrator to check privacy, rights, safety or accuracy, without registering an account. Return in the same browser to see its status under “My reports”. Reports are private to their sender and administrator. Explain the affected passage or image without sending sensitive documents. The administrator reviews reports manually; reporting does not automatically remove content.
